Nancy Maina is the Founder and CEO of Ballroom Dancing Lovers newsletter and website for people who love and enjoy ballroomdancing.

Prior to founding BDL, Nancy Maina was the founder of Aberdare Yarns a company that hand span mohair yarns in Kenya and it exported the yarn to the USA. This was a secondary job to her Statistical Officer’s job in the Central Bureau of Statistics. Aberdare Yarns were featured in the Winter ’91-92 VOGUE knitting international magazine and in the Winter 1991 Cast-on magazine for knitters. This company closed when the supplier of the unique mohair decided to stop rearing goats that “Eat Only For Their Hair.”

When Nancy worn a 1996 DV VISA in the USA Government lottery it took her one year to take the leap to move from her native country with her three children. She landed a Data Analyst job at Online Development Company in her first week, while she was still living in a Motel and searching for a house. In her third week she found a furnished house that came with a potty-trained house cat within walking distance to her office.

In her first year at ODC Nancy learned how to ice skate, rock climb, ski and was a Deacon at her Presbyterian Church in Waltham and when her kids wowed at this new mom, she told them, “You are all going to school busy with your home work and other activities, if I don’t exercise and use my power pack muscles I am going to shrivel and die.” They would laugh and she would tell them, “I am not joking.”

When ODC was bought by a larger company Nancy opted to work elsewhere as an assistant Director at CSR a department at UMass Boston University. She then decided to go back to school and changed her career to Nursing.

Nancy has always loved outdoor activities and has climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, but when her daughter got married she rekindled her love of dance by dancing the Bump to the Osibisa music beat. The Wedding guests were so inspired that they stood up and joined the Mother/Daughter dance before they were invited to join.

Nancy decided to have the Mother/Son Samba dance Choreographed by John Paul of DanceSport Boston studio. The wedding guests in Kenya were mesmerized by the performance and were left asking for more.

Nancy is a grandmother of three wonderful boys and has since performed three Ballroom Dance showcases and hopes that her love of dance will inspire others live fuller healthier lives looking younger than their age.
